AA Kenya Road Safety Awards 2026 recognise corporate leadership, sustainable mobility and innovation as businesses step up investment in safer roads and transport.

In Summary:

Road safety is emerging as an important business and investment priority as companies, transport operators and public institutions face growing pressure to protect lives, strengthen fleet management and embrace sustainable mobility. At the Road Safety Excellence Awards 2026 in Nairobi, AA Kenya recognised organisations leading road safety initiatives, with TotalEnergies Marketing Kenya PLC winning Best Corporate in Road Safety and SPIRO emerging as a leader in sustainable mobility. The awards highlighted the growing role of corporate leadership, electric mobility, innovation and community engagement in building safer and more sustainable transport systems in Kenya.

Road safety is increasingly becoming a business priority in Kenya, with companies, transport operators and public institutions recognising that safer roads are essential to protecting workers, securing investments and building a more sustainable transport sector. This shift took centre stage at the AA Kenya Road Safety Excellence Awards 2026, where organisations and individuals were recognised for their contributions to reducing road risks and promoting responsible mobility.

Held yesterday in Nairobi, the awards brought together stakeholders from government, business, civil society and the transport industry to celebrate achievements in road safety while reinforcing the need for sustained investment in prevention, innovation and public awareness.

For businesses operating in logistics, manufacturing, insurance, tourism and passenger transport, road safety extends beyond regulatory compliance. It influences operating costs, fleet reliability, employee welfare, insurance exposure and the continuity of business operations. The recognition of corporate institutions at the awards therefore underscored the growing importance of embedding safety into business strategies and everyday operational decisions.

Speaking during the ceremony, AA Kenya Group Managing Director Francis Theuri called for stronger collaboration between public and private sector stakeholders, emphasising sustained investment in road safety awareness, responsible road use and practical interventions to reduce crashes and protect lives.

His message highlighted the need for road safety to become a shared responsibility rather than an obligation left solely to government agencies or traffic enforcement officers. Businesses that operate vehicle fleets, distribute goods, transport passengers or depend on road networks for their supply chains have a direct interest in improving safety standards.

TotalEnergies Marketing Kenya PLC emerged as the winner of the Best Corporate in Road Safety Award, followed by British American Tobacco Kenya PLC and Finlay’s Tea Extracts Kenya. Their recognition placed corporate road safety initiatives firmly within the broader discussion about responsible business practices and the protection of employees, customers and other road users.

The awards also recognised leadership at the executive level, with Prof. Isaiah I. C. Wakindiki, Vice-Chancellor and CEO of KCA University, leading the CEO of the Year in Road Safety category. Habel Amakobe of Pioneer Road Safety Consultants and Milad Atef of Egypro East Africa Limited were also recognised among the leading nominees.

Such recognition reflects the importance of leadership in establishing organisational safety cultures, from employee training and vehicle maintenance to the enforcement of responsible driving practices. For businesses, effective road safety management can help minimise disruptions, protect company assets and strengthen relationships with employees, customers and regulators.

Sustainable mobility also featured prominently, reflecting the growing intersection between transport safety, environmental responsibility and investment in new technologies. Africa Smart Mobility Solutions Kenya Limited, operating under the SPIRO brand, led the Sustainable Mobility and EV Champion Award, with Kenya Power and Lighting Company PLC and KenGen also among the leading entries.

The recognition comes as electric mobility attracts increasing attention across Kenya, particularly in the two-wheeler segment, where electric motorcycles are emerging as an alternative for commercial riders and delivery operators. Beyond their potential environmental benefits, electric mobility solutions are creating opportunities for investment in charging infrastructure, vehicle servicing, fleet operations and associated technologies.

However, the expansion of electric mobility must be accompanied by appropriate safety standards, rider training, reliable maintenance systems and public awareness. As new transport technologies enter the market, businesses and institutions have an opportunity to ensure that innovation contributes to safer roads alongside improved efficiency and sustainability.

The insurance sector also played a prominent role, with Britam General Insurance Company emerging as the winner of the Insurance Company of the Year in Road Safety category, followed by Directline Assurance Company Limited.

For insurers, road safety is closely linked to risk management, claims exposure and the long-term sustainability of motor insurance operations. Greater emphasis on accident prevention, responsible driving and vehicle safety can support efforts to manage risks while encouraging motorists and fleet operators to adopt better practices.

The awards also recognised the contribution of communication and advocacy in influencing road-user behaviour. Sikika Road Safety topped the Best Media in Road Safety category, followed by She Can Drive Kenya and John Tumaini Ministry. Their recognition highlighted the importance of public education in addressing dangerous driving, promoting compliance with traffic regulations and encouraging shared responsibility among motorists, passengers and pedestrians.

In public transport, Kinatwa SACCO Society Limited led the PSV SACCO in Road Safety category, followed by Newsight Travellers SACCO. The recognition of transport operators is particularly significant in a sector that connects millions of people to workplaces, businesses, educational institutions and essential services.

Improving safety within the public service vehicle industry requires consistent driver training, vehicle inspections, responsible scheduling and effective management systems. For transport operators, these measures can contribute to passenger confidence, operational reliability and the protection of investments in vehicles and related infrastructure.

The Kenya Red Cross Society was recognised in both logistics and community engagement, leading the Logistics Institution in Road Safety category and the Community Engagement Award. Kenya Forest Service led the Driver Safety and Wellness Award, while Bamburi Cement Limited won the Road Safety Innovation Award.

These recognitions demonstrated that road safety extends across multiple sectors, including humanitarian operations, logistics, environmental management and industrial production. Organisations whose work depends on vehicle movement can incorporate safety into procurement, staff welfare, driver supervision and the management of transport-related risks.

Education and community-based transport also featured in the awards. Braeburn Group led the Educational Institution in Road Safety category, while Juja Sub-County Bodaboda Association topped the Boda Boda SACCO Award. CFAO Mobility Kenya emerged as the leader in the Automotive Workshop and Garage Award, highlighting the importance of vehicle servicing and maintenance in road safety.

Clive Mwangovya Gari was named Road Safety Champion of the Year, while the Traffic Police Leadership Award recognised Machera Caleb of Nakuru East, Corporal Hecky Odiwuor Opollo of Makuyu and Elizabeth Vivi, Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer for the Central Region.

The recognition of individual advocates, traffic officers and community transport associations reinforced the need for coordinated action at every level, from corporate boardrooms and vehicle workshops to neighbourhoods where boda boda operators and other road users interact daily.

For Kenya's business community, the broader message is that investment in road safety should be viewed as part of long-term economic resilience. Crashes can disrupt supply chains, affect workforce productivity, damage vehicles and increase the financial burden on families, businesses and public institutions. Preventive measures can therefore deliver benefits that extend beyond the immediate objective of reducing injuries and fatalities.

As the transport sector evolves, opportunities will also emerge for businesses investing in fleet monitoring, driver training, vehicle maintenance, road safety technology and sustainable mobility infrastructure. Realising this potential will require collaboration between government, private enterprise, insurers, transport associations and civil society.

AA Kenya reaffirmed its commitment to road safety advocacy, stakeholder engagement and responsible road use, calling on institutions and road users to sustain their efforts towards reducing crashes.

Ultimately, the significance of the Road Safety Excellence Awards 2026 lies not only in recognising achievements but also in encouraging organisations to translate recognition into lasting action. For businesses and investors, safer roads represent an important foundation for reliable transport, sustainable mobility and a more resilient Kenyan economy.
