Africa’s cybersecurity threat is accelerating as AI makes cyberattacks faster and more sophisticated, putting individuals, businesses and governments at greater risk.

Africa’s rapid digital transformation is creating enormous economic opportunity, but without stronger cybersecurity, skills, accountability and AI readiness, the same technologies driving growth could become the infrastructure through which criminals, fraudsters and hostile actors undermine individuals, businesses and governments.


Cybersecurity is no longer a problem that can be left to the IT department. It has become a question of economic resilience, national security, business continuity and public trust.

That reality is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore as Africa digitises at remarkable speed. From mobile money and digital banking to cloud computing, e-commerce, government platforms and increasingly connected critical infrastructure, more of everyday life and economic activity is moving online.

But every new digital connection also creates another potential point of exposure.

The warning is particularly relevant for Africa, where digital transformation is advancing alongside uneven levels of cybersecurity preparedness. INTERPOL’s 2025 Africa Cyberthreat Assessment found that cybercrime accounted for more than 30 per cent of reported crime in both Eastern and Western Africa, while online scams, ransomware and business email compromise remained among the continent’s most prominent threats. 

The challenge is no longer simply about whether an organisation will experience a cyberattack. The more important question is whether it will be sufficiently prepared when one occurs.

That was one of the key messages emerging from a conversation with Filippo Monticelli, Senior Vice President, EMEA South at Fortinet. His assessment is particularly relevant because the cyber threat is increasingly being shaped by artificial intelligence, automation and the sheer speed at which malicious actors can operate.

Fortinet’s 2026 Global Threat Landscape Report illustrates the scale of the problem. FortiGuard Labs recorded 122 billion exploitation attempts in 2025, while the company says attackers are increasingly using AI and automation to compress the time between discovering vulnerabilities and exploiting them.

For an African organisation operating with limited cybersecurity personnel, outdated systems or inadequate budgets, that shrinking response window is a serious concern.

A vulnerability that might previously have remained unnoticed for weeks can now become an opportunity for attackers within hours or days.

This is where AI changes the equation.

Artificial intelligence is not inherently a cybersecurity threat. It is a tool, and like many powerful technologies, its impact depends on who is using it and for what purpose.

Cybercriminals can use AI to make phishing messages more convincing, automate reconnaissance, generate fraudulent communications, manipulate digital content and scale attacks beyond what an individual criminal could realistically achieve manually.

But defenders can use the same technology to identify anomalies, analyse enormous volumes of security data, detect suspicious behaviour and accelerate responses.

The contest, therefore, is not simply between humans and machines. It is increasingly a contest between organisations that know how to use technology defensively and those that remain several steps behind the threat.

For newsrooms, the answer cannot be to reject AI. It must be to become better at using it responsibly.

AI can assist journalists in checking claims, identifying inconsistencies, analysing documents, comparing information and detecting patterns. But it cannot replace editorial judgement, source verification or professional accountability.

Monticelli’s advice that AI should also be used defensively is therefore relevant well beyond cybersecurity teams. Journalists, businesses and ordinary citizens can use AI as an additional layer of verification—but should never treat an AI-generated answer as unquestionable evidence.

The principle should be simple: use AI to investigate information, not to outsource responsibility for believing it.

For individuals, cybersecurity increasingly begins with ordinary digital behaviour.

A stolen password, a convincing phishing message, a compromised email account or a fraudulent mobile-money request can have consequences far beyond a single device. Personal information can become valuable material for identity theft, financial fraud, impersonation and social engineering.

The growth of AI-assisted fraud makes this more concerning because attackers can increasingly personalise their approaches.

For businesses, the stakes are even higher.

A cyberattack can interrupt operations, expose customer information, compromise financial systems, damage a company's reputation and create legal and regulatory consequences. For small and medium-sized enterprises, which often operate with limited financial and technical resources, a serious breach can become an existential business event.

This makes cybersecurity an investment rather than simply an expense.

Organisations need to move away from the assumption that security begins after a digital product or system has been built. Security has to be considered during the design stage.

Whether an organisation is deploying cloud infrastructure, developing a mobile application, connecting employees remotely or introducing an AI system, security should be built into the architecture from the beginning.

The same principle applies at government level.

Modern states increasingly depend on interconnected digital systems for taxation, healthcare, identity management, transport, financial services, public communication and critical infrastructure. A successful cyberattack against one component can therefore have consequences across an entire ecosystem.

The threat is particularly serious because economies themselves are interconnected.

As Monticelli noted, cyber threats are increasingly affecting sectors ranging from finance and energy to water, industry and other critical services. In periods of geopolitical tension, cyber operations can also form part of broader hybrid campaigns designed to disrupt systems that societies depend upon.

Africa cannot afford to treat these developments as problems happening somewhere else.

INTERPOL's 2025 assessment found that 90 per cent of African countries reported a need for significant improvement in law-enforcement or prosecution capacity related to cybercrime. The report also identified shortcomings in digital evidence systems, cyber-threat intelligence databases, international cooperation and access to specialised capabilities. 

That should be a continental wake-up call.

Cybercriminals do not respect borders, yet cybersecurity responses remain heavily organised around national boundaries. A fraudster can operate from one country, use infrastructure hosted in another, target victims in a third and move proceeds through several jurisdictions.

Africa therefore needs stronger cross-border intelligence sharing, coordinated investigations, compatible legal frameworks and deeper public-private cooperation.

There are encouraging signs.

INTERPOL-led operations across Africa have demonstrated that coordinated action can disrupt large criminal networks. Operation Serengeti 2.0, for example, involved 18 African countries and resulted in more than 1,200 arrests while targeting cybercriminal networks responsible for attacks affecting tens of thousands of victims. 

But enforcement alone will not solve the problem.

Africa also needs to invest aggressively in cybersecurity skills.

The continent's digital future will depend not only on how many people can code or use digital platforms, but on how many professionals understand how to protect the systems being built.

That means cybersecurity education in universities and technical institutions, continuous professional development, stronger digital-forensics capacity, investment in security operations centres and better training for law enforcement, regulators, journalists and corporate leaders.

It also means changing the culture inside organisations.

Cybersecurity cannot be the responsibility of one IT officer while executives, finance teams, human-resource departments and ordinary employees treat security as someone else's problem.

The weakest password, the unverified attachment, the compromised employee account or the careless disclosure of information can become the entry point into an otherwise sophisticated organisation.

Resilience is therefore collective.

For Kenya and other African economies, the opportunity is significant. A strong cybersecurity ecosystem can create jobs, develop specialised technology industries, attract investment and increase confidence in digital services.

But that opportunity will only be realised if cybersecurity grows alongside digitalisation rather than several steps behind it.

The question Africa faces is not whether it will become more digital. That transformation is already underway.

The question is whether it will become resilient at the same speed.

AI is accelerating both sides of the cybersecurity equation. It gives criminals new capabilities, but it also gives defenders unprecedented tools for detecting and responding to threats.

The strategic choice is therefore not whether Africa should embrace AI. It is whether Africa will develop the skills, institutions, infrastructure and accountability necessary to use it safely.
